I had heard mumblings about TEEN VOGUE releasing a career guide, and have been anxious to see if this would actually come to fruition. Lo and behold, look what I found on Amazon: The TEEN VOGUE Handbook: An Insider’s Guide to Careers in Fashion. After picking it up myself, I was impressed by how thorough the book was. I had watched the video provided by Amazon that featured Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley, she had mentioned that the book was created to answer the age old question, “How do I break into the fashion industry?”. She also stated that there is not one particular way to break into the industry. The book stays true to that statement, highlighting the different paths that fashion industry superstars have taken in order to get where they are today. People like Marc Jacobs, Patrick Demarchelier and Bruce Weber all share their insight on working in fashion via in-depth interviews, but there is also a lot of practical information in the handbook, such as how to write a resume, dress for an interview and create a portfolio.
I highly reccomend this book, as it is filled with amazing stories and information. I was particularly impressed with a statement that was made by Anna Wintour. She said, “Do your homework, go online, visit every museum, and intern. You just need to have a love for what you’re doing. It’s not about thinking that it’s the cool thing; it’s about really believing in it.” That being said, the interviews in the book should serve as an inspiration on how to break into an industry, not a map. There is no formula to “making it,” but like Anna said, “believing in it” and yourself is what will get you the farthest.
